My house, measured
Full fibre: 2.7 Gbps. At my desk, over wifi: 95 Mbps.
Slow wasn't the worst of it. I logged my connection every 30 seconds for six months. Each square is one day.
Grey: it stalled. Red: it dropped out completely. Amber: on the cable.
- 149 of 178 days stalled long enough to clip a word off a call.
- 90 days it dropped out altogether.
- 11 days on the cable so far (to 25 September): no stalls, no dropouts.
This is my house, an end-terrace in Levenshulme. The cable goes round the outside. Speeds are from my own speed tests, wired and over wifi.
The fix
Ethernet cable, round the outside.
- Weatherproof network cable up the outside wall, straight to the room you work in.
- Two pencil-width holes, sloped down and sealed. No floorboards up, nothing to redecorate.
- Usually done in a day. A wall socket at each end, tested before we leave.
